The history of Georgia and Russia has been frought with conflict for the past 100 years, Gerogia finally roke away to form it's own govenement and here we are in the present day conflict.
Georgia said one of its policemen was shot dead from a Russian position Wednesday in violation of a fragile truce, as a major crack appeared in the EU-brokered ceasefire over the remit of EU observers.
The Georgians said it was the first fatal shooting since the August 12 ceasefire that brought an end to the five-day war between Georgia and Russia over Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia.
"This is the first time that Georgian police or military personnel have been shot at since the ceasefire began," Georgian interior ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili told AFP.
An unnamed spokesman for the Russian forces in South Ossetia quoted by Interfax denied the incident and said he would not believe it until the Georgians showed him the body.
Georgia's interior ministry told AFP the officer died in hospital from wounds to the head and throat after being fired on near Karaleti, a key Russian position on the road from the Georgian city of Gori to South Ossetia.
Utiashvili said it was unclear whether the shots had been fired by Russian forces or by Moscow-backed South Ossetian militants.
The Georgian foreign ministry reacted furiously, accusing the Russians of gross ceasefire violations.
Russia's "armed forces not only do not comply with the political commitments undertaken by their president... but go as far as to completely disregard them thus causing the death of innocent people," the ministry said.
Georgia's August 7 offensive to regain control of South Ossetia from Moscow-backed separatists prompted a massive retaliatory thrust by Russia into Georgian territory from which thousands of Russian troops have yet to withdraw.
Russia argues that it repelled Georgian troops to protect thousands of people whom it had granted Russian citizenship since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. The West accuses it of seeking to redraw the map by effectively annexing part of its ex-Soviet neighbour.
Hundreds of people on both sides are estimated to have been killed in the conflict. Tens of thousands fled their homes.
The US President Bush urged Russia to "reconsider this irresponsible decision," which he said was inconsistent with U.N. Security Council resolutions that predate the conflict and a French-brokered cease-fire agreement.
Tensions started between the two nations in the late 1980s and now they are at war. Some people assume that the fighting is revenge for what is happening in Serbia. The US says that Georgia were the agressors in this fight. The US must be on the Russians side.

1. Georgia used to be in the former Soviet Union (Now Russia). Georgia and Russia are now fighting over regions LIke South Ossetia. South Ossetia now wants to have their own freedom as a whole seperate nation along with other regions.

Georgia was part of the Russian Empire and gained independence around 1918.It was invade by Russia and then it joined the Soviet Union in 1921.Russia invaded Georgia because Russia supported South Ossetia's idea of being it's own country.The US believes Russia did the wrong things and the US supports Georgia by giving them help to repair the damage from the attack.

There have been several controversies over land, and government since then. This led to the invasion. The US is sending troops into Georgia to oversee the humanitarian efforts. American forces in Georgia will test Russia’s pledge to allow relief supplies into the country. They could also stop further Russian attacks, though at the risk of a potential military confrontation.
Georgia and Russia have always had a conflict between them. Georgia broke away to be a Democracy and Russia didn't like that. So Russia got mad and they shot one of Georgia's cops. Needless to say, Georgia got mad back and now they are in a war. The United States isn't happy about the war but they aren't going to jump into the war now. But if they were going to they would be on Georgias' side.

In 1783 Georgia signed the Treaty of Georgievsk with the Russian Empire, placing the eastern Georgian kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti under Russian control. Despite Russia's commitment to defend Georgia, it gave no assistance when the Turks invaded in 1785 and then in 1795. This period came to an end in the 1801 Russian annexation of remaining Georgian lands and the deposing of the Bagrationi dynasty.

Currently in August of 2008 Georgia invaded the region of South Ossetia and Abkahazia. (These republics were under Russian support). So in result the Russians counter attacked, and won.
The United States of America has given aid to Georgia.By military supplies, food, and medical equipment.And we continue to be allies with Georgia.

The last 200 years Georgia used to be a part of Russia, but they try to change that durable, but Russia doesn’t want that, so they invoke the 200 year old history and see Georgia as a vassal state. Official they started the five-days war, for protecting the two apostate regions Abchasien and Southossetien.
The USA started in 1999 helping eastern countries, so for example gets Georgia since 1994 military help of the U.S. . So in case of a bigger war, in fact it would probably become a war between America and Russia!
Georgia and Russia's relations go far back. It started from Georgia asking Russia for protection in the military. Russia invaded Georgia because Georgia invaded a southern country and broke a treaty with Russia in doing so. The US has nothing to do with this.

3.)The stance of the U.S. with regard to this situation is that it was not a wise decision but we still support them.
